GROUPING

Each one of you has a piece of paper with your name, number, and group on it. Memorize the number and never forget it. We will refer to each other by the number more often than by the name. Be sure not to tell others what your number or group is. The information is ONLY FOR YOU.

ONE IMPORTANT NOTE: The placement of students in groups does NOT mean collaboration. Ideally, you should not know who your groupmates are, nor who the editor for your group is. The work is completely individual, so please do your best to refrain from asking around who is also in the same group as you. IT DOES NOT MATTER. YOU ARE NOT GOING TO BE WORKING TOGETHER IN GROUPS!

JOBS

You could have gotten one of two types of jobs: outlining or editing. Both jobs require almost equal amounts of work. If your group has an “Ed.” in it, then that means you are an editor.

OUTLINERS

Attached is a paper that breaks down materials into separate segments. Each group is assigned a segment. The outliner must READ the segment, and outline it paragraph by paragraph. The outline must be very well organized (see the example provided). Write as concisely as possible. Only highlight the important facts.

REMEMBER! THE OUTLINES ARE NOT ONLY FOR YOU. SO DO YOUR BEST TO MAKE THEM GENERALLY UNDERSTANDABLE AND USEFUL. DON’T OUTLINE JUST THE FACTS YOU NEED TO KNOW. BUT ALSO, TRY NOT TO HAVE ANY USELESS JUNK IN THERE EITHER.

The outlines are due on Thursday, August 4, 2005. The best way to send the outline to me is through email as an attachment. I highly encourage this method, since it makes everyone’s work a gazillion times easier. If you don’t have a computer, please use a library or something. After that, proceed with the next assignment on the list.

VERY IMPORTANT! For file names and subject headings in your emails, don’t be funky, creative, random, or otherwise unordinary. These are the rules for naming your documents:

Subj_Segment#_GroupFirstLetter_Your#.doc

For example, if Number 34 from the group Foxtrot was working on the 3rd segment of History, then the file name would be: Hist_3_F_34.doc

The subject for the email with the attached Word file will be pretty much the same, except without abbreviations and underscores. E.g. History 3rd Foxtrot 34. I am more lenient on the subject headings. You can use some imagination, but be sure to have all 4 things in there.

EDITORS

Each editor is assigned to a group. This is the one mentioned in parentheses in your card. Editors will have the whole week to simply read the material. You will then receive 3 outlines from me in one email on or before Friday, August 5. Please check that all of the file names indicate that they are of the same segment and the same group. In case of inconsistency, contact me.

Your job, then, is to go over all the outlines, and together with your knowledge of the material, (since I trust you have READ the section beforehand) construct one final outline that encompasses all the good parts of the three you were given.

After you are done with the final outline, you will email it to me. The convention for the filename is quite simple here:

Subj_Segment#_”Final”.doc

E.g. Hist_3_Final.doc

The subject heading, again, can be creative, but it has to have the subject, the segment number, and the word “final” in there.

The final outlines will be due on Saturday, August 13.

REPLIES

I will reply to each of you when I receive a file from you. Mostly my reply will simply be “OK.” This is only to confirm that I received the file. If you do not get a reply within 2 days, please get panicky and call me. Also, PLEASE DO NOT REPLY TO MY CONFIRMATIONS, CONFIRMING THAT YOU HAVE RECEIVED MY CONFIRMATION. THIS IS STUPIDLY REDUNDANT!

When I send you a file, please return the courtesy and reply to me, at least within 3 days. You don’t have to compose a love letter or a novel for a reply. Just a simple “OK” or “got it” would suffice.

FINAL WORDS

Observe all the guidelines. You are encouraged to be creative unless strict conventions are obliged. There will be a test in the first week of school on this material. Details to come.

When you have questions, call me at 818.640.9135 or email at yegorhayk89@yahoo.com

OBSERVE ALL DEADLINES!!!

OUTLINERS ARE NOT ALLOWED TO DISCUSS THEIR WORK WITH ANYONE ELSE. YOU ARE OBLIGED TO KEEP YOUR GROUP CONFIDENTIAL. NO ONE BESIDES ME SHOULD KNOW WHICH GROUP YOU ARE IN!
